'The Seaweed Harvesters'

'The Seaweed Harvesters'
After Paul Gauguin

The hanging, which converts to a long-line waistcoat, is an “Art to Wear” project for my International Diploma in Crochet, Part III.

The painting was chosen because the subject matter related to my dissertation.

The seascape background is a Romney/Kent fleece, hand dyed using chemical dyes, and spun on an Ashford wheel. Colours were dyed to reflect Gauguin's palette.

Faces are painted calico. Figures were scaled up and divided into separate units – skirt, trousers, hats etc. Techniques include surface crochet, embroidery, handmade felt.
